American Cemetery and Memorial in Makati
Sitting in a 61.5 hectare lot off Fort Bonifacio in Taguig and Forbes Park in Makati is the largest cemetery and memorial that was built, and is currently being administered by the American Battle Monuments Commission. Dedicated in December 8, 1960, exactly 19 years after the attack on Pearl Harbor and the invasion of the Philippines, the cemetery and memorial ground has since then been visited by millions from all over the world. In the center of the cemetery is the Memorial where a small chapel is fronted by two hemicycles. The chapel’s sculpture is of the American warrior Saint George fighting a dragon. The Altar is largely a mosaic of a graceful lady scattering flower petals. On the rectangular limestone piers within the hemicycles are tablets on which the names of the Missing 36,286 are inscribed. One might notice rosette markings on the names of those who have since been recovered and identified.
Radiating from the Memorial are 11 burial plots lettered from A to L ( no letter I) that are “home” to 17,097 headstones of which 16,933 are Latin crosses with the remaining 164 Stars of David. The gallant military men buried in the cemetery were casualties of World War II mostly from operations in the Philippines and New Guinea.

The memorial park is open to the public from 9:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. every day except on American holidays, December 25 and January 1. From Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA), drive through McKinley Road at Forbes Park right to Lawton Avenue then left to old Lawton Avenue straight to the rotunda to reach the cemetery. From C5 enter Global City in Taguig at 26th Street then left to McKinley Parkway.
